The Payne 100 Taper

The Gallatin is built on the Payne 100, one of E.F. Payne's most versatile and beloved designs. A true medium action that loads progressively from tip to butt, the 100 rewards a patient stroke and returns it with a delivery that graphite simply cannot replicate. Dry flies settle. Leaders turn over without disturbance. The line straightens on the water as if it chose to.

At 7'6" for a 4-weight, the Gallatin covers a broad range of water — intimate meadow streams, classic freestones, moderate canyon rivers — anywhere that finesse and accuracy matter more than power. It is not a rod for fighting wind or throwing heavy rigs. It is a rod for the kind of fishing where those things are beside the point.

The Gallatin is hand-planed to the standard that has defined Headwaters rods since 2002.

The fittings: A finely knurled double-locking downlocking reel seat with stabilized burled maple insert. Ultra-fine cork grip. Red agate stripping guide. Hard chrome guides wrapped in deep burgundy thread with a narrow black tip.

The tube: Cordura rod tube with rod sock included.
