Questions about Headwaters Bamboo

Most bamboo rods are built by a single maker, sold through dealers, and priced accordingly — $1,500 to $4,000 before you wait a year or more to receive it. We do it differently. We build direct, sell direct, and pass the savings straight to you. Same Tonkin cane. Same hand-split, hand-planed construction. A fraction of the price.

Simple. Wiggle it, cast it, fish it. If you're not pleased with the rod within 30 days, contact us and we'll take it back — full refund or a different rod, your choice. No hoops. No hassle.

Your Headwaters rod is warranted for life against any defect in materials or workmanship. If something isn't right, we'll make it right. The warranty covers the original owner and reflects something we believe without reservation: a rod built this way should last longer than the angler who fishes it.

Email us and we'll send you a return label — we cover the cost. Once the rod is back in Sandpoint we'll issue a full refund or send you a replacement, whichever you prefer.

Headwaters Bamboo is based in Sandpoint, Idaho. Every rod is quality-checked and shipped from here. Returns come back to us here as well.

Our rods are built in China by three shops we've worked with for over 20 years. These are not production facilities cranking out commodity gear — they are specialists who build exclusively to our specifications and quality standards. The relationship is long, the standards are high, and the results speak for themselves.

Every Headwaters rod is built from genuine Tonkin cane, sourced from the Sui River region of southern China near the town of Aozi. Tonkin is the gold standard for split cane rods — denser, stronger, and more resilient than any other bamboo variety. There is no substitute and we don't use one.

Each rod begins as raw Tonkin cane — the same material the great American rod builders used throughout the 20th century. The cane is hand split and hand planed to micro tolerances. Six tapered triangular strips are glued and bound into the hexagonal blank that defines a true split cane rod. Every step is done by hand, by people who have done it thousands of times.

Most rods ship same or next business day via USPS Priority Mail 2-Day. If a rod is momentarily out of stock the wait is typically no more than a few weeks — never seasons. You'll receive a tracking number as soon as your order ships.

Questions about the rods

Taper is the shape of the rod blank from butt to tip — it determines length, line weight, and how the rod loads and feels in your hand. Our tapers are drawn from the historical designs of the master American rod builders of the 20th century: Garrison, Payne, Young. Proven designs that have been putting trout in the net for generations.

Flex action describes where and how much the rod bends during the cast. We build in two primary actions. Our classic rods are medium action — roughly two-thirds of the blank flexes when you load it, giving you that slow, deliberate bamboo cadence. Our medium-fast rods load in the upper third and cast with more authority — better for longer presentations, bigger water, and anglers coming from graphite who want the feel of bamboo without giving up distance.

If you want to fine-tune either action, drop one line weight for a stiffer feel or go up one for something softer. Not sure which rod fits your fishing? Use our Rod Finder to get a recommendation in about a minute.

Most of our rods are two-piece. Longer rods — some 8-footers and above — are available in three-piece configurations so they pack down easier for travel, backpacking, or tight vehicle storage. Same blank, same action, same performance.

Bamboo can develop a set — a slight warp — if the same tip is fished repeatedly without rotating. Two tips lets you alternate daily, keeping both tips straight and your rod fishing true for years. It's standard practice with quality bamboo rods and one of the reasons they last so long.

The opposite is true. A bamboo rod is solid cane — graphite and fiberglass rods are hollow tubes. Bamboo has been the material of choice for fly rods for 150 years precisely because it is resilient, forgiving, and extraordinarily durable when cared for properly.

Press and pull the ferrules straight — never at an angle. Keep the ferrules clean and dry and do not wax them. Never store the rod wet. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from excessive heat. Don't lean an assembled rod against a wall or lay it horizontally unsupported. If you snag a fly, point the rod tip at the fly and step back — never use the rod as a lever. Do all of this and your Headwaters rod will outlast you.

Blonde — sometimes called golden — refers to the natural color of the Tonkin cane after it's been processed and finished. We currently build all our rods in blonde. It's the classic look: warm, honey-toned cane under spar varnish, the way bamboo rods have looked for over a century.

The best place to start is our Rod Finder. Answer a few quick questions about where you fish and how you cast and we'll point you to the right rod. If you'd rather talk it through, reach out directly — we're happy to help.

Reels, lines, and gear

Yes. We're relaunching the Clark Fork Reel — our own Headwaters-branded reel built specifically to complement our bamboo rods. The 2.5" is $275 and the 3" is $295. Classic styling, solid construction, priced to fish rather than sit in a display case. Check the site for availability.

Yes. We carry the EB Series WF line — an Extended Belly weight-forward line with extra weight in the head, designed specifically to load bamboo rods efficiently. If you're fishing bamboo for the first time, this is the line we recommend.

We are currently clearancing our wader inventory. Check the site for available sizes and pricing while stock lasts.
