Why this rod

Where most anglers start.

The Henrys Fork of the Snake is one of the most demanding trout rivers in the country. Long flats, wary fish, and presentations that have to be perfect. This rod was built for exactly that water, and it turns out that is exactly the water most of us fish on our best days.

At 7 foot 9 in a 5-weight, the Para 14 taper loads deep and unhurried. It does not punch line, it carries it, and it lays a fly down with almost no disturbance. On fine tippet over a rising fish, that difference is the whole game.

Anglers who have fished a lot of bamboo tend to reach for a Para 14 when the fishing gets serious. It is a fine first cane rod and a rod you will not outgrow.

Hand-planed to the standard that has defined Headwaters rods since 2002. Every rod is built in small batches and sold direct, which is the only reason a rod this good lands near $420.00 instead of $1,500 with a year’s wait.

From anglers who own one

★★★★★

“This is my third Headwaters rod. Each one has impressed me well above its price point. My first one was bought 18 years ago and is still in superb shape after many days on the water. I’ve cast much more expensive rods which aren’t finished as nicely and don’t fish as well. I really appreciate the value and quality of these rods.”

Josh K., verified buyer

★★★★★

“Bought a Headwaters rod as my first bamboo rod years ago and still love it. I own 5 other bamboo rods now and have cast so many more. This rod is still one of my favorites. Great way to get into bamboo at a great price.”

Bill Z., verified buyer

★★★★★

“Great bamboo rod for the money, action is as described. Finish and wraps are good. Comes in a sock and nice case.”

Common questions

It fishes. The slower load and natural flex of Tonkin cane does something graphite can’t, especially on small to medium water with dry flies. Most anglers who try it end up fishing both. The question is whether you want to feel the difference.
Tonkin cane is one of the strongest natural materials per pound. These rods get fished hard on freestone streams and high-desert rivers. Treat it like any fine fly rod, don’t slam it in a car door, and it will fish for decades. Most bamboo rods outlive their owners.
This week. Rods are built in small batches and kept in stock, so there is no year-long wait like most bamboo makers.
Fish it for 30 days. If it’s not right, send it back for a full refund. And if you’re unsure it’s the right model, the 60-second Rod Finder will point you to the one built for your water.
