Twelve lessons. If you came through the Short Course first, that's fifteen. You know more about bamboo fly rods now than most people who own one.

What you know now

You can pick up a rod and read it: the swing weight, how it recovers, how a set looks when you sight down a section, and what to try at 15, 30 and 50 feet before you decide.

You know the cane up close. How a culm is chosen, why nodes get staggered, what heat treatment trades off, and the difference between blond and flamed.

You know which construction details matter, from step-down ferrules and glue lines to dipped varnish and guide spacing. You can read a taper chart and see the shape of a rod in a column of numbers.

You know how to line a bamboo rod, and why over-lining often helps. You know the schools of design, from Leonard and the Catskill tradition to the Midwest makers and the West, and where each of our tapers sits.

You've worked past "wait longer" on the stroke: the stop, the roll cast, mending, wind, and fighting a fish without leaning on the tip. You can match a rod to the water you actually fish.

You know how to care for a rod and fix the small stuff. You can walk up to a used or vintage rod and know within minutes whether it's worth a closer look. And you've seen inside our own workshop, down to the eight checks every rod passes before it ships.

That last part is the one I care about most. You can judge any bamboo rod now, ours included. That was the point.

The final exam

One exam stands between you and the certificate.

• 24 questions, two from each lesson.
• Open book. Go back to any lesson you like.
• Unlimited retakes. Take it as many times as you want.
• Your certificate appears on screen the moment you finish.
• Your graduate price arrives by email.

Take your time. There's no clock on it.

Take the final exam

The certificate is a real one. Bamboo Certified, Class of 2026. Print it, hang it above your rods, or just know you earned it.

A last word

I started Headwaters to put a real Tonkin cane rod, on a proven historical taper, within reach of a normal fisherman. This course is the other half of that. A good rod in the hands of someone who knows what it is, how it was built and how to care for it will fish for decades.

You don't need to buy anything to have gotten your time's worth here. If you do buy a bamboo rod, from us or anyone else, you'll know what you're holding. You'll know the questions to ask, and when an answer doesn't add up.

I hope the next thing I hear from you is about a fish. On cane, at 25 feet, under a branch you weren't sure you could reach.
