Every Headwaters rod is genuine Tonkin cane, hand-split and hand-planed into six strips and built to a classic taper. The craftsmanship that used to cost $1,500 or more, the agate guides, nickel-silver hardware, and hand-wrapped silk, comes direct from the maker from $400.

★ Named Best Affordable Bamboo Fly Rod 2026 by Into Fly Fishing

What goes into a Headwaters bamboo rod?

A bamboo fly rod starts as a stalk of Tonkin cane. We split it by hand into six strips, hand-plane each one to a precise taper, and glue them into a solid hexagonal shaft. You can see the flat of each strip along the rod, which is how you know it is real split cane and not a molded or laminate blank.

The components

Every Deluxe rod carries the parts you normally only find on custom rods costing several times as much:

  • Agate stripping guide. A polished agate insert, the kind of component found on Jim Payne and Everett Garrison rods. Most rods under $1,000 use ceramic.
  • Nickel-silver ferrules and hardware. Heritage-grade metal, not chromed brass.
  • Hand-wrapped silk. Red silk with black tipping, wrapped by hand.
  • Hex-planed Tonkin cane. Six strips of genuine cane, hand-split and hand-planed.

Classic tapers, built to spec

The taper is the rod's DNA. We build to the specs of the great makers, Jim Payne, Lyle Dickerson, Paul Young, Goodwin Granger, and Everett Garrison, not "inspired by" them. Each rod in the lineup carries a named taper you can read about in our guide to bamboo rod makers.

What reviewers say

Flyfishing & Tying Journal called the finish "flawless" and "impressive." Into Fly Fishing named Headwaters Best Affordable Bamboo Fly Rod in 2026. You can read more on our reviews page.

Affordable without cutting corners

None of this costs what it used to. Because we sell direct from the maker, the same craftsmanship starts at $400 for the Favorite Series and $600 for the Deluxe Series, instead of the $1,500 to $4,000 a custom rod commands.

Backed for life

A well-made bamboo rod lasts generations. Every Headwaters rod ships with a 30-day trial and a lifetime warranty for the original owner.
